Early Orthodontic Evaluation at Age 7
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends every child have a first orthodontic evaluation around age 7. Here is the part most parents find reassuring: most children evaluated at 7 do not need treatment yet. The visit is about catching the small number of problems that are genuinely easier to address while the jaw is still growing — and giving everyone else a clean bill of health and a monitoring plan.
Adult teeth are arriving
By 7, the first adult molars and incisors are in — enough for a specialist to read how the bite is developing and whether the jaws have room for what’s coming.
Growth is a tool
A handful of problems — crossbites, severe crowding, jaw-width issues, harmful habits like persistent thumb-sucking or mouth breathing — respond best while growth can still be guided. Wait too long and the same fix gets bigger.
CBCT 3D imaging, gentle visit
At our studio the evaluation is unhurried: an exam, in-house CBCT 3D imaging when indicated, and a plain-English conversation. No pressure, no scare tactics.
Most kids: watch and wait
The most common outcome is a recheck schedule — we monitor growth at no-drama intervals and start treatment only if and when it genuinely helps. Parents leave knowing, instead of wondering.
Whether your dentist suggested an orthodontic check or you’ve simply noticed crowding, gaps, or mouth breathing, an evaluation gives you answers. Learn more about braces, clear aligner options, or our Garden City studio — or just come in and ask.
